Literature & Language – Advanced Literary Challenges
Challenge yourself with one (or more) of the following activities:
Activity # 1 – Free-writing Dash
Free-writing is an exercise used by writers to gather their thoughts and ideas, without judgment.
TO DO: Just start a timer and write whatever you want for 10 minutes, without concern for where you start, what you say, or how it ends. Do not worry about punctuation, grammar, or spelling. Write into a notecard in SL, write by hand into a notebook in RL, type into a document of your choice on your PC or on the Internet. Try to do this 15 minute dash by using any of the following prompts:
* Just start to write whatever comes into your head
* Try using your non-dominant hand to write or type…see what happens
==> Opine v.tr. To state as an opinion. Latin: opinari – to have an opinion.
==> “Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don’t.” – Pete Seeger
Then save it in your inventory. If you would like to have your free-write essay featured on the Sim, drop it into the drop nearest notecard drop box to enter it in the monthly drawing.
Activity # 2 – Found Poetry Dash
Based on the Short Poetry Workshop, hosted by Sunnie Beaumont on Tuesdays at 7pm SLT, at Cookie Sim.
Use an article, speech, letter, other royalty-free poems, street signs, bits of conversation to create a poem.
What is Found poetry?
• Poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources
• Two methods:
1. Reframing the words by making changes in spacing and/or lines (and consequently meaning) – Treated -changed in a profound and systematic manner;
…OR…
2. Altering the text by additions and/or deletions – Untreated – virtually unchanged from the order, syntax and meaning of the original.
• Often made from newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems.
• Similar to a Cento – using lines from other poems to create a new poem

Activity # 3 – Use a word, phrase, or picture to write a drabble.
What is a drabble?
A drabble is a short work of fiction of around one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author’s ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.
TO DO:
Create a short work of fiction, about 100 words in length, pertaining to the image shown below. Save it in your inventory.
If you would like to have your drabble featured on the Sim, drop it into the nearest notecard drop box to enter it in the monthly drawing.

Flash & Dash for Writers and Playwrights gives writers an opportunity to compose or work on short stage plays and scenes. We work exclusively with the Flash play format, also known as the 10-minute play. This play form is usually a one act play, most often one scene, and runs approximately 10 minutes.
